Stand with us and show your support for our campaign! We would like to introduce you to various individuals whose biographies are representative of many others. Some are clients, some are activists for LGBTIQ* refugees. These stories have touched us and reveal a reality that many in our city of Munich are unaware of. Behind the numbers and statistics on arrivals are people just like you and me. Let's get to know them.

Pride Means Protection, not Deportation.

We are queer asylum seekers and refugees in Germany, facing growing hostility, discrimination, and the threat of deportation. Current treatment in the asylum system, together with upcoming Common European Asylum System (Gemeinsames Europäisches Asylsystem) reforms – which speed up border procedures, expand detention-like conditions, and limit fair hearings – makes obtaining protection even more difficult. Together with the LGBTIQ+ Refugee Counselling Center in Sub e.V. (Schwul-Queeres Zentrum Sub) and under the umbrella of Rainbow Refugees Munich, we have launched a campaign to raise awareness, demand visibility and inclusion, and to ask Germany’s queer community and its allies to stand with us in solidarity.

Three dedicated Pride spokespeople serve as the public face of our campaign: Kayaga Hadijah Nanyonjo (she/her), Suru Emmanuel (he/them), and Wasajja Shadic (he/him). They bring visibility to the challenges faced by LGBTQ* asylum seekers and refugees in Germany, advocate for fair treatment during the asylum procedure and protection from deportation and persecution, and embody the authentic, unified voice of LGBTQ* refugees in Munich. Pride means protection, not deportation. Pride is for all, regardless of origin. Support queer asylum seekers and refugees in Munich! Join us. Raise your voice. Make a difference. Now meet our spokes people block:

Kayaga Hadijah Nanyonjo - she/her
“This pride, I stand as a mother and ally, holding onto love across borders. My LGBTQ* daughter is still in Uganda, living in fear. I am confronted with this painful reality every day. Now, it is my duty to be her strength. I am amplifying my voice to advocate for lesbian gay bisexual trans* and queer refugees. They deserve safety and a second chance at life. We must stop deporting pride.”

Kayaga Hadijah Nanyonjo (she/her) is a political and LGBTQ* activist from Uganda with a strong focus on women’s rights. She brings extensive professional experience and has led several local initiatives targeting women, girls, and LGBTQ* individuals.

Suru Emmanuel - he/them
“This Pride, look beyond the celebration. Look to the shelters, the waiting rooms, the LGBTQ* refugees silenced by trauma and endless kepticism. They came to Germany seeking safety, yet the system moves too slow. Pride is more than a party—it is resistance, survival, and the demand for protection. Uphold the law. Uphold the people. Uphold Pride.”

Suru Emmanuel (he/them) is a decolonial human rights activist and 2025 Doha Debates Ambassador. He works on advocacy, healing, and social justice for sexual and gender minorities, co-curates the ADINKRA West African Indigenous art space, and advances Pan-African liberation through art, activism, and movement building.

Wasajja Shadic - he/him
“As a queer Ugandan, Pride is something I survived to reach. In Uganda, queerness is criminalized – leaving was a necessity to stay live. In Germany, LGBTQ* rights exist, but queer refugees still face deportation, rushed procedures, and disbelief. Pride must include those whose safety is conditional. We are here. We belong.“

Wasajja Shadic (he/him) is a Ugandan LGBTQ* activist, visual artist, and co-founder of PEDI Uganda, a trans-led organization supporting displaced LGBTQ* people. Through art and advocacy, he amplifies marginalized voices, promotes healing, and advances dignity and equality for queer communities.
